In Troy Regis v. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Secret Service forensic lab, an agency responsible for producing forensic evidence used in criminal prosecutions, was caught suppressing key evidence and misleading the court. Troy Regis, a fingerprint specialist was fired after being placed on Performance Improvement plan. When he requested data on how often other employees made errors or revised their reports. The agency claimed it did not track that information and said retrieving it would be too burdensome. That was false. After discovery closed, it was revealed that an internal spreadsheet containing over 1,000 rows of error data had existed on the agency's network the entire time. The director of the Secret Service Forensic lab, along with other agency officials, intentionally misrepresented their ability to access the data and withheld critical information.

The Judge imposed serious sanctions, including a finding that Regis was likely held to a higher standard than his peers, that others routinely made similar or worse errors, and that the agency would be barred from offering any evidence to the contrary. This case reveals a disturbing failure of integrity at the top of a forensic agency whose work can directly influence whether an individual is convicted and imprisoned.
